Delphi implements lead-free automotive products

A Delphi presentation has been published describing in detail the companies implementation of lead-free technologies in their range of automotive products. In progress since 2002, the programme began limited production in 2007 and has a schedule extending to 2011 and beyond.

The presentation by Sam Platt of Delphi, US was first given at a March 2009 meeting of the Partners for Pollution Prevention.

Automotive electronics are not within the original scope of the EU RoHS Directive, although there is now pressure on the sector under the RoHS revision process.

The presentation discusses the phases of the implementation and highlights the product conversion schedule. Delphi plans to be completely lead-free by 2016.

Details of the drivers for conversion and impact of lead-free soldering on processing are given. results of reliability tests are presented and tin whisker issues discussed.
